Built Around How You Actually Use Your Space

Most Outdoor Projects Fail Because They're Rushed.

They get designed without thinking through how the space will actually be used. We take a different approach. Before we build anything, we focus on how you plan to use the space, how it connects to your home, and what materials will hold up over time.

The goal is simple, build something that feels like it belongs there and functions the way you expect it to.

About EZ Custom Homes

14+ Years of Hands-On Building.

EZ Custom Homes is based in New Lenox and serves homeowners throughout the Chicagoland area. The company was built by Colin Ettema, who started in construction over 14 years ago framing houses with his dad. Over time, that turned into running projects together, then eventually taking over and rebranding the business in 2021.

That background matters. This is not a company that learned construction from YouTube or jumped into remodeling without experience. This is someone who has been on job sites for years and understands how things are supposed to be built.

  • Quality of work that consistently stands out
  • Communication that's clear and consistent throughout the build
  • A process that feels organized, not chaotic

Today, the focus is on outdoor living, custom homes, and large-scale remodeling projects.

A Deck You'll Actually Use

Designed for Your Home, Built to Last.

Decks are still the most popular outdoor project, but most are built too quickly and without enough attention to detail. We build them differently, with the same level of detail we'd bring to a home.

  • Composite decking using Trex and TimberTech, the products we trust long term
  • Wood decks for clients who prefer that look and accept the maintenance
  • Multi-level decks and custom layouts that follow the home's footprint
  • Westbury railing systems that hold up to weather and age cleanly
  • Structural detailing, fasteners, blocking, and flashing, done properly
What We Build Outside

Four Outdoor Project Types. One Standard.

Whether it's a covered patio off the back of the house or a full outdoor kitchen, the level of detail stays the same.

Custom Deck Building

Composite and wood decks built with the structural detail that separates a good deck from one that holds up for 20 years.

  • Trex & TimberTech composite
  • Wood decking on request
  • Multi-level & custom layouts

Patio Covers & Roof Structures

A deck without shade often goes unused in the summer. Covered patio spaces solve that, and we build them so they feel like part of the house.

  • Attached patio roofs
  • Covered outdoor living areas
  • Integrated structures matched to your home
  • Tongue-and-groove ceiling options

Screened-In Porches

Screened porches let you use the space without bugs, weather, or direct sun. We design them to feel finished, like an additional room, not temporary.

  • Full-screen wall systems
  • Integrated lighting & outlets
  • Composite or wood flooring
  • Year-round usability

What a Typical Project Looks Like

People Want to Use Their Backyard More.

Most outdoor projects start with that simple goal. In a lot of cases, it turns into a custom composite deck connected directly to the home, plus some form of cover for the summer.

"Without shade, a lot of decks end up unused during the hottest parts of the day. Adding a roof or partial cover turns the space into something you can actually sit in and enjoy."

Screened porches are another common upgrade, especially for homeowners who want to avoid bugs and extend the time they can spend outside. Instead of feeling like an open deck, the space starts to feel like an additional room attached to the house.

For larger projects, we see complete outdoor setups, built-in seating, outdoor kitchens, or defined areas for entertaining. These take more planning, but when they're done right, they change how the whole backyard is used.

Why Homeowners Choose EZ Custom Homes

There's a Reason Most Of Our Work Comes From Referrals.

A lot of contractors can build a deck. That's not the issue. The difference comes down to how the project is handled.

We stay involved throughout the build, not just at the beginning and the final walkthrough.
