Building a custom home is not something most people do twice. It is a major decision, and it needs to be done right the first time. We build fully custom homes designed around your layout, your property, and your lifestyle, not a modified template.
They come in with ideas, inspiration, and a general direction. That's where we come in. We work with you early in the process to understand how you want the home to function, help define layout and flow, and make practical decisions that will still make sense years from now.
A lot of builders will push you toward pre-designed plans because it's faster for them. We take a different approach. We focus on building something that fits you, even if that takes more time upfront, because once construction starts, the goal is to move forward with clarity, not guesswork.
About EZCH
EZ Custom Homes is based in New Lenox and serves homeowners throughout the Chicagoland area. Owner Colin Ettema started in construction over 14 years ago, working alongside his dad framing houses. That experience built a strong foundation in how homes are actually put together, not just how they look on paper.
That background matters more than most people realize. When you build a custom home, you are trusting someone to manage every part of the project, structure, layout, sequencing, materials, and coordination, and that only happens when the builder understands the full process, not just pieces of it.
Most of the homes we build are fully custom. No templates. No pre-set plans. From there, everything is customized to fit you.

Two-story custom builds designed for growing families or anyone who wants the bedrooms separated from main living areas.
Plan around how you actually live, not a builder's template.

Selected together based on durability, style, and how you'll live with them.
We operate as a design-build contractor, which means we stay involved from the earliest stages of planning. We work closely with an architect who functions as part of our team. That lets us give input on layout before plans are finalized, help avoid design decisions that will create issues during construction, and keep the project moving efficiently.
"We'll sketch out rough concepts and floor plans before bringing in the architect, so you can visualize the space and make decisions sooner."
This approach saves time and prevents unnecessary costs later in the process. By the time the architect formalizes the plans, the big decisions have already been pressure-tested by a builder who's going to actually construct the home.
The pre-construction phase is one of the most important parts of the whole project. The goal is to remove as many unknowns as possible before construction begins, that's how you avoid delays, cost overruns, and unnecessary stress.
Realistic budget expectations mapped to your goals, plus a clear scope of work and design direction.
Material selections and allowances locked in early so there are no surprises during the build.
Structural considerations, engineering reviews, and permit requirements handled before breaking ground.
Help evaluating land before you buy, reviewing site conditions, and planning for any potential challenges.
Typical Features
Most custom homes today share a few common features, but how those features come together is what makes each project different.
Some clients come in with very specific ideas. Others need more guidance. In both cases, we shape the result into a complete home, not just a collection of features.
We meet to understand your vision, your priorities, and your budget range.
We review your ideas and provide a realistic price range based on similar projects.
We finalize layout, scope, and the key decisions before building begins.
We handle engineering, permits, and approvals needed to move forward.
Your home is built with consistent oversight and communication throughout.
We review the finished home with you and make sure everything meets expectations.
Building a custom home is a long process, and the builder you pick has a direct impact on how that experience goes.
We stay in contact throughout the project, so you always know what is happening.
We focus on quality at every stage, not just the final result you see in photos.
This is not a company learning as they go. We've been building homes for years.
We work with your ideas and help refine them into something that actually makes sense.
If your question isn't here, the fastest way to get a real answer is a quick conversation. We'll give realistic numbers early, not at the end.
